This is a very nice example of an early Parker Vacumatic. This is the standard model and was made in the USA. The barrel is date coded for 1937. This is the 1st Generation model with the lockdown filler. Most of the lockdown filling pumps were made from aluminium but this was later changed to steel because the lockdown notches started to wear very quickly, Parker also experimeted with brass filler units and this is one of them, I have not seen one of these before.
The first generation Vacumatics (1932 - 1936) were fitted with the metal lockdown filler and had a short blind cap, the seond generation (1937 - 1941) were fitted with the speedline filler with the longer blind cap, the third generation (1942 - 1948) were fitted with the plastic filler, again with a longer blind cap. There were some crossovers on the dates as old stock was used up. Canadian models tended to lag behind the US production as old stock was passed to Toronto to make way for new stock in Janesville.
The pen is in good condition throughout with minor marks and scratches commensurate with light use. The chrome plating to the clip is a little pitted. The imprint on the barrel is clear and legible. The clip screw jewel, the bottom tassie jewel and the section are all made from the same stripy silver pearl material, this too is quite rare as most of the vacs were fitted with black hard rubber trim.
The diaphragm has been replaced and the pen is in full working order.
The 14ct gold nib writes smoothly with a Fine line.
