The J series was introduced by Esterbrook around 1943 and was an immediate success. Despite being a relatively inexpensive pen, they are incredibly well made. The use of thicker walled plastics prevented any distortion and the extensive use of stainless steel for the trim ensured that the pens last for years. All the nibs were made from high quality stainless steel and Esterbrook took the innovative step of making every nib fit every pen by using a standard threaded mounting system. It is rare to find a distorted or corroded Esterbrook even 70 years after they first appeared and this is a great testament to the company and the fabulous work of its designers.
There were three main variants of the J series;
The Standard J, conventional length and diameter.
The LJ, same length as the J but narrower.
The SJ, same diameter as the LJ but shorter.
All the nibs were interchangeable with any model in all three ranges. They were also all available in the same range of finishes.
This particular pen is an SJ finished in the beautiful Blue Marble. It is fitted with a #2284 Broad Italic nib which writes beautifully.
It is in excellent condition with only minor wear marks.
It has been fully serviced and is ready to go!!
The Esterbrook J series pens are a delight to use and the steel nibs are incredible. They have always been regarded as great writers and are now becoming scarce.
