This is a large and stunningly beautiful fountain pen. It was hand made by Mr Eiichi Uehara, the master pen craftsman from the company Ohashi-Do based in Sendai, Japan. It is an exquisite piece of work and a fine example of just how good these craftsmen are. Every piece is made by hand, even his lathe was foot powered.
The cap, barrel and feed are made from ebonite (Black Hard Rubber) and the nib is hand crafted using traditional methods. All Ohashi-Do pens are marked with the letter J.S.U. on the top of the clip, this stands for Japan Sendai Euhara and it gives the pen its authenticty.
Sadly Eiichi is no longer with us, he died in 2010 at the age of 91. However the family business continues through his son Yuuchi, the third generation of the Uehara dynasty. Yuuchi learnt his craft from his father in the same way that Eiichi learnt from his father back in the 1930's.
This pen dates from around 1990 but the dates are quite difficult to establish as the same design has been used for decades.
