Pelikan pens have been made in Hanover, Germany since the late 1920's. The piston system, used by all the major European manufacturers, was invented by Pelikan and virtually the same system is still in use today. Pelikan pens were built to very strict tolerances and as a result they have the enviable reputation of being the most reliable pens ever made.

Most pen experts recognise Pelikan as superior to all of the other European manufacturers, including Montblanc! The vintage models, especially, are very much sought after.

This is a Pelikan P1, made around 1960.  The P1 was introduced in September of 1958 and enjoyed only a short production run ending sometime in 1963.  

The ‘P’ designation stands out as unusual here because this more commonly denotes a patronen-füller or cartridge pen but the P1 is in fact a piston filled fountain pen.

This model was available as both Silvexa (P1S) and Rolled Gold (P1RG) variants. This is the P1RG in Ruby Red with a rolled gold cap. It is in fabulous condition with very minor marks and no plating wear.

The pen is fitted with a lovely Medium nib which is totally original to the pen. The piston fillling system has been fully serviced and lubricated and it now works perfectly. The P1 is a rare pen and hard to find in this condition.
